The Tony Effect

Change is necessary in life from time to time.

And before the 2013-2014 season, something changed for the Seton Hall women’s basketball program. Seton Hall hired Anthony Bozzella to become the new Head Coach of the team and he has worked wonders since being hired.

Seton Hall was a lower-rung team in the Big East Conference and for Bozzella, an alum of the University that was unacceptable. Before becoming the captain of the ship that is Seton Hall Women’s basketball, the team won just 11 games in the season prior to his hiring.

In his three full seasons at the helm, he and the team has won 20 or more games and have made it to the postseason in each of those seasons. The great play that Bozzella has instilled in the program brought them to the NCAA tournament in back to back season for the first time since 1995 and in 2015 the Pirates earned the number one seed in the conference tournament.

Coach Bozzella has also racked up many awards for him and his players since taking over. He was named the Big East Coach of the Year and the Maggie Dixon Division I Coach of the Year award following the 2015 season. He was also one of 10 finalists for the Naismith Division I Women’s College Basketball Coach of the Year award that year as well.

“I am proud that we have built a championship tradition here,” Bozzella stated. “We want to show that every year we compete for championships and when people talk about Seton Hall women’s basketball, they are talking about a winning program.”

Winning is not the sole focus though for Bozzella and the team. He has worked on building a family atmosphere that caters to his players. He often holds team dinners or game nights at his home just to have the team bond together off the court to build a relationship and chemistry. He believes that the comradery the girls build off the court will only help them when they have to play games.

“It’s great to have balance and I think Coach does a good job of that,” freshman guard Kaela Hilaire said. “We know when it comes down to it we have to win and play hard, but it’s great that we can all have fun together.”

That fun and loose atmosphere has proven to work for Bozzella’s Pirates as now they have earned success under him and they do not want that to change anytime soon.
